Telehealth vs In Person Therapy

It goes without saying, in this past couple years, we have been faced with many challenges. We, as a society, have adapted in how we live, work, and operate day-to-day. One of the ways we have adjusted at Strength in Motion is by offering teletherapy sessions like many other clinicians. Now that things are shifting to more in-person activities again, you may have questions regarding returning to face-to-face with your clinician or remaining virtual. Research regarding face-to-face versus teletherapy (done via phone or video) began in the 1960s, which goes to show this is not a new practice. The following results are related to a study conducted in 2012.

“In one randomized controlled trial Mohr conducted comparing cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) delivered face-to-face versus over the telephone to 325 patients with major depressive disorder, he found equivalent outcomes at the end of treatment (JAMA, Vol. 307, No. 21, 2012). In fact, though treatment effects were slightly more lasting in the face-to-face population, those patients were also more likely to drop out of therapy.”

The article further states that research has found teletherapy to be effective for depression, anxiety, adjustment disorders, substance use, and eating disorders. Though it can be effective,  “Still, some psychologists point to challenges with phone-based care. Clinical psychologist Marlene Maheu, PhD, founder and executive director of the Telebehavioral Health Institute, says both patients and providers can easily become distracted by emails, text messages or the desire to multitask,” as stated in the APA’s article.

The important matter to consider is your own needs and desires. Check in with yourself and ask questions like the following:

  • What does my body need right now? Can I sit still in front of a screen?
  • What will help me attend therapy? Do I need the external motivation of getting out of the hose or do I need the comfort of my own space to open up? Where will I feel most comfortable?
  • Can I check in with somebody virtually? Have I been able to connect with people in this way before?

It’s great to look inside yourself to decide the next best step for you.

In a CNET article from 2019, “Nearly 60% of American adults with a mental illness didn’t receive mental health services in the previous year, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The reasons why — stigma, cost, accessibility — vary.” Whether teletherapy or face-to-face is your path forward – take a moment to be proud you’re taking steps to take care of yourself.
