Healing Mental and Physical Illness Through Spirit

April 4, 2019

“Things falling apart is a kind of testing and also a kind of healing. We think that the point is to pass the test or to overcome the problem, but the truth is that things don’t really get solved. They come together and they fall apart. Then they come together again and fall apart again. It’s just like that. The healing comes from letting there be room for all of this to happen: room for grief, for relief, for misery, for joy.”

-Pema Chodron, When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times

Our symptoms are here to teach us lessons. Including the energy of disease, the profound ways we are taught to find our authentic selves and our path towards healing.

When we’re in the thick of it, pain and illness seem like a curse without silver lining. But our symptoms can be some of life’s greatest teachers. The journey of healing can be a profound path to finding our authentic selves and lead us toward something greater than we ever could have imagined.

Everything eventually comes to a place of peace.

The hard truth is that our emotions live in a state of impermanence. Whether we’re feeling joy or pain, it will eventually fade. But when we’re in the thick of it, pain can feel particularly unending, and happy moments fleeting. Trust that no matter what you’re going through, everything settles into a place of peace and acceptance when we learn to let go of expectation and judgement. It’s easier said than done, but when we surrender to this process, we learn how to be courageous in the face of challenges and find healing and strength.

Wherever you go, there you are.

Sometimes we get so hyper focused on the destination that the journey to get there is ignored, perhaps out of fear or anxiety. And when the destination is “complete healing”, it’s no surprise that it’s a common urge to rush the process, rather than sludge through the tough emotions that come with mental or physical illness. It makes sense - feelings of discomfort signal to our brain and body that we are not safe, and we are then wired by evolution to do whatever it takes to get back to safety. The great irony is that the most important lessons about finding safety and peace within ourselves will be found along the journey, and not at the final stop. Because wherever you go, there you are. It’s about understanding what you can do, right here, right now, to find peace within yourself rather than waiting for it to “happen” on its own.
