Mindful reflections of 2018: Three Important Questions for Self-Reflection

Here we are, ready for the big transition to the unknown of 2019. To make the most of the 12 months ahead, we believe it’s important to pause and reflect on the past 12 months. You’re invited to take a moment, before diving into the curiosity of the next chapter, to learn and draw lessons from your experiences over the past year.

 

The transition into the new year is a time to reconnect with your true most authentic self. Make this a treat - a moment of quality me-time that can become your own end-of-year ritual. Turn off your phone, pick up your favorite journal, light up a treasured candle, cozy up under a warm blanket, and reflect back.

 

Here are three prompts to get you started:

 

What did you learn?

2018 has been eventful, and for some of us, difficult as well. As we go into a new year, it’s time to take stock of both the amazing and also the sometimes painful lessons life has taught us. Think about how 2018 has changed you. Who were you when you started the year and who are you now? Reflect on key experiences, how you handled them at the time, and how you would deal with them now. Visualization can be a powerful tool to recall memories: close your eyes and bring yourself back to those moments, reminiscing on what you felt and how you acted. Finally, be kind to yourself, as this exercise should not be centred around judging yourself.

 

What am I proud of?

It’s time for a pat on the back. Often we are harder on ourselves than we would ever be on our loved ones. This process self-reflection is about owning your successes, big or small. It could be anything from a meeting you’ve handled well at work to a risk you dared take. Make sure to review all areas of your life, from your relationships to your career, to your health. Simple things like emailing your parents regularly and eating your vegetables are also achievements that can go on the list. Look back at your calendar we

 

ek by week and identify key events when you just nailed it.

 

What do you want to let go of?

We’re not just talking about clothes and books that don’t bring you joy anymore, but also people who might have held you back in 2018 or dreams that you have outgrown. We all entertain toxic relationships that make us feel bad or hold onto goals we think we feel pressured to invest in. Asking yourself this question will set the stage to begin establishing what you want your 2019 to look like without any of the heavy and superfluous links that are weighing you down.
