Bring Yourself to Spring

Welcoming Spring, on your Time, with Intention and Ritual

"The arrival of spring marks the end of the darkest season of the year. As the introspective influence of winter wanes, spring symbolizes growth and fertility, bringing the reemergence of light, warmth, plants, animals, new ideas and fresh perspectives into the world.”

Spring can bring mixed emotions. On the one hand, spring fever hits and we are hungry for newness! We want to be outside, social, and creative- and yet moments of depression, anxiety, or overwhelm may be present as well. And because we are human we get to feel it all. However, if we add some intention, ritual and deep listening to our own pace, we can navigate our way into a whole hearted welcoming of spring, and deep honoring of who we are and where we’re at.

A worthwhile spring contemplation is what needs to be nurtured, and possibly let go, before we can step into something new?

Are there tender and vulnerable parts of ourselves that we have contacted through winter’s introspection, that still need some attention? We can offer ourself simple self-compassion gestures, such as deep breaths with our hands on our heart. We can speak gently to the parts of ourselves that are not quite ready to dive into spring social time, and honor our pacing. Instead of blaming ourselves for not diving right into late social evenings, we can spend time in the evening nurturing ourselves. Read delicious books and poetry, have an intimate evening with a friend or partner, take a slow walk in a beautiful place. When we go slow enough to be with all of the parts of ourselves, then when we move towards spring energy and excitement, we do not leave ourselves behind! And we can be present and enjoy the adventures we choose.

Often before we can step into something new, we have to release something old. What winter skin are we ready to shed? Spring cleaning and smudging or clearing are beautiful ways to ritualize letting go.

We can go through our closets, what do we own that no longer delights? Let’s ditch it. What knick knacks, kitchen items, throw pillows, no longer feel delicious? Let’s ditch them. We can make some space for ourselves and new spring energy. When we have cleared out what you no longer need, we cleanse the space.

Smudging is one of the ways to energetically cleanse a space to invite positive energy. When smudging a space, you burn plant material. The smoke fills and purifies the environment. As the smoke ascends, our wishes and intentions rise and mingle into the universe, connecting heaven, earth and humanity.

Smoke offerings are found in many traditions such as Buddhism, Native American and other spiritual religions. The smoke ceremony creates transformation and blesses a space and the inhabitants.

Buddhists call it a Lha Sang and use dried juniper. Native Americans often use dried sage. The cultures that use this practice are too numerous to name, but we can hold gratitude for them in our heart, honor the wisdom of their tradition, and see what speaks to us. Purification ritual is a way to release what no longer serves, and invite the energy we wish to surround ourselves with. Clarity helps, we name what we’re releasing as we bring the smoke around our house, getting every nook and cranny. We ask for what we’re inviting- the sky’s the limit! Peace, harmony, energy, health, abundance, clear thinking, sanity - claim it.

And finally, what are we ready to step into? What seeds are we planting? What spring endeavors feel right? Birthing a new creative or career project? Perhaps a new movement and or meditation practice? Taking time to contemplate, journal, collage, dream and vision- encourages us to move into spring with effectiveness and delight. The act of choosing, and dreaming, empowers us to be the creators of our own story.

May your spring be full of wonder and excitement. May your pace yourself and listen deeply to your body and your heart, and may the seeds you plant bloom beautifully!
