We are excited to announce our new Mindful Recovery Group for young adults! Have you ever found yourself stuck repeating an addictive pattern (whether it’s a substance or a behavior) and struggling to break free? Sometimes we end up on autopilot and do or start to do things without even thinking about them, and then end up with unintended consequences. And for most of us, the unintended consequences and the pain that comes along with them then increases the likelihood of repeating the original pattern in the first place. A vicious cycle!
The new Mindful Recovery Group offers skills and tools to help you gain a better understanding of the underlying factors that lead up to your pattern playing out over and over again. Mindfulness is a key aspect of any change, but it is especially helpful in working with recovery. Dr. Marsha Linehan (creator of DBT) described these types of struggles as trying to walk through a dark room that is littered with furniture and obstacles, all the while tripping and falling down because you can’t see where you’re going. Mindfulness is like turning on the light in that room: it won’t remove the obstacles for you, but it will allow you to navigate your way through the easiest possible path to the other side (without all the bumping and bruising). Mindfulness allows us to see our patterns; it creates space in between stimulus and response, and in that space lives our ability to choose something different for ourselves.
What will I learn?
The new group will provide a safe community to explore and work with the struggles unique to recovery. The facilitator, Becky Howie, will teach a variety of techniques focused specifically on recovery, including:
Learning to identify and work with triggers (whether they are thoughts/emotions, other people, or specific places/situations).
You will learn how to identify and set healthy boundaries with others in your life, and say “no” when it matters to you.
The group will provide a map through the change process and tools for working with each step along the way so that you know what to expect.
You will also learn proactive skills to help protect you in the future from falling into the same old patterns again and again.

About the Facilitator:
Becky Howie is an experienced group facilitator who has worked with addictions for over 3 years, and mindfulness for over 8 years. She has a masters degree in counseling from Naropa University where she learned how to integrate her personal mindfulness practice into her clinical work with clients to increase the benefits of therapy. She is passionate about helping people overcome the obstacles that plague them and believes that everyone has the capacity for change already inside them.
