We are excited to announce our new Support and Skills group for parents of adolescents who are struggling. We know that oftentimes there are a plethora of groups and treatment programs out there for individuals struggling with behavioral or substance use addictions, but sometimes the family members of those people are left trying to figure out how to cope alone. Do you feel frustrated and don’t know how to deal with your teen’s behavior or addictive tendencies (food, video games, drugs and alcohol, etc.)? Do you find yourself trying to help them or control their behaviors or addictions so that they don’t keep harming them or you? If you have an adolescent who is struggling and would like to find support from others who understand your situation, this group may be for you.
The Support and Skills group offers both the support of people who can relate to your struggles, as well as formal tools and skills that can help you work through the difficulties of living with a teen’s difficult behavior or addictions. The group will teach mindfulness as way to bring greater awareness to the patterns that often play out over and over again. It is not uncommon for us to come from a place of reactivity when we are hurt or frustrated by someone in our lives. Mindfulness helps to create a space in between stimulus (difficult situation/trigger) and response. In that space lies our ability to choose something different, to break out of the old pattern that keeps repeating.
This new group, facilitated by Becky Howie, will also teach non-violent communication skills for addressing difficult behaviors. Non-violent communication is an authentic form of dialog that increases the likelihood of our message being received by the other person, rather than resulting in escalating arguments or shutting down. When we can learn to take good care of ourselves by identifying our own needs and setting healthy boundaries, we can step out of the vicious cycle of anger and frustration into more open and honest relationships.
