With Thanksgiving around the corner, we are reminded once more of the power of gratitude. Practicing gratitude helps us become more empathetic, reduces stress, and even helps shape our resilience. It is good for our bodies, as studies show that grateful people also tend to have a higher focus on their health and wellbeing. But giving thanks isn’t only for the month of November – given these fantastic benefits, we suggest keeping an attitude of gratitude year round. Here are a few of our favorite ways to keep a thankful heart all year long.
Here Are Three of Our Favorite Gratitude Practices
Put pen to paper.
Not just for our teen years, a gratitude journal is beneficial for a host of reasons. It presents an excellent opportunity to slow down and reflect. Most of us live busy and even hectic lives, and it is critical to make space to acknowledge and focus on what we are grateful for. Not to mention, for those who have trouble sleeping, writing down what we are grateful for at the end of the day has been shown by studies to help people sleep more soundly. That’s certainly something to be grateful for!
Say your thank yous.
It turns out those thank you notes our parents insisted we write do even more good than they thought. Verbalizing our gratitude isn’t just good manners, but expressing a thoughtful “thank you” to others helps us build and maintain relationships. One study noted that saying thank you to acquaintances makes them more likely to continue pursuing a friendship.
Give one compliment a day
Get in the habit of handing out compliments that highlight what you appreciate in the people around you. The simple act of bringing attention to the worthiness of another person not only makes them feel valued, but boosts our mood as well. It’s a way of retraining our brain to focus on the positive (even when it’s challenging to do so), so both parties benefit from giving and receiving authentic kindness.
